When global technology consultancy Thoughtworks needed a new Barcelona office, they turned to Area. Tasked with creating a space that reflected their culture, strengthened client connections, and supported their people, our team faced a tight three-month deadline driven by an imminent lease expiry. Stepping in early, we helped secure the right location – and transformed it at speed.
Thoughtworks had just three months to find, design, and move into a new workplace. We joined the project from day one – supporting the property search as well as designing the space. After reviewing several options, Thoughtworks initially selected one building, and we began developing the concept. But midway through, they opted for a different site in Park Central.
That meant a fast pivot. We adapted the existing design to the new location without slowing the programme – keeping the vision intact, the collaboration strong, and the schedule on track.
Thoughtworks’ new Barcelona location is more than a workplace – it’s a hub for internal teams and client collaboration. A quarter of the space is dedicated to a key client’s delivery and sales function, with the rest supporting Thoughtworks’ own operations.
From the outset, the goal was to create a destination, not just an office. Diverse work settings and flexible social spaces encourage movement, connection, and community. The design supports hybrid working while fostering face-to-face interaction – from casual chats in the café-style breakout, to team workshops, to large-scale events on the panoramic terrace.
While the Barcelona office reflects Thoughtworks’ global brand standards – with its defined colour palette, collaborative space strategy, and signature tones of pink, blue, teal, and sage – it was also carefully tailored to its setting. This approach thoughtfully defines areas for teamwork, focus, and social interaction, ensuring the office supports both productivity and collaboration. Subtle yet meaningful local references are woven throughout, celebrating the character of the city.
The floorplate layout takes its cue from Barcelona’s iconic grid structure , bringing a sense of order and flow that mirrors the city’s rhythm. Underfoot, custom carpet – designed to resemble miniature ceramic tiles – quietly nods to Barcelona’s architectural heritage, evoking the textures and patterns of its streets and plazas.
Local craftsmanship was a priority throughout the fit out, with furniture and finishes sourced from regional manufacturers – supporting the local economy and reinforcing a strong sense of place.
Inclusivity and wellbeing were central to the design, shaping everything from spatial planning to material selection. The aim was to create a welcoming, intuitive environment that supports every user – whether they’re collaborating, focusing, socialising, or taking a moment to recharge. A muted, neuro-inclusive colour palette helps minimise sensory overload, while acoustic treatments and carefully zoned areas provide comfort for different working styles.
At the heart of the wellbeing offer is a dedicated wellness room – a calm, private space for rest, reflection, or mindfulness. Whether used for prayer, quiet time, or simply a pause in a busy day, it offers a retreat from the open workspace. Beyond the interior, a zen garden-inspired corner on the terrace features soft seating and natural textures, inviting people to unwind.
The wider design blends collaborative areas, quiet zones, and social spaces to meet a variety of daily needs. A large island kitchen anchors the main breakout area, encouraging informal gatherings and spontaneous connection. Nearby, a fully flexible workshop space can adapt from team sessions to presentations and client events, ensuring the workplace works hard – whatever the occasion.
