Siemens Healthineers

The project centred on merging two separate offices – Siemens Healthineers and Varian – into one cohesive environment. Each had different ways of working, legacy spaces and varying levels of workplace technology.

The new office needed to support a hybrid workforce, while encouraging employees back into the workplace. It also had to align with Siemens’ global workplace and brand standards, integrate advanced AV and technology requirements, and be delivered efficiently in terms of both cost and sustainability.

Bringing these elements together into a single floorplate required careful planning, particularly around space utilisation and team integration.

We designed a flexible, technology-led workplace that balances collaboration, focus and wellbeing.

At the heart of the space is a vibrant work café, designed as a social hub to bring people together. This is complemented by a range of settings, including hybrid meeting rooms, a boardroom, training and project spaces with flexible, reconfigurable furniture, as well as smaller meeting rooms for focused discussions.

The workplace also includes a library and a dedicated wellness space, giving employees areas for quiet work and downtime. The overall approach creates a varied environment that allows people to choose how and where they work throughout the day.

Technology played a key role. Siemens has well-defined AV standards, and the design ensured seamless integration across meeting rooms and collaboration spaces, creating a consistent and reliable user experience.

A major driver for the project was reducing environmental impact without compromising quality.

A key initiative was the reuse of an existing modular partition system already installed in the building. Rather than replacing it, Area reconfigured and integrated it into the new design, reducing both material waste and cost.

This approach was supported by upgrading all lighting to energy-efficient LED systems and retaining and repurposing elements wherever possible. The design also prioritises long-term flexibility, helping to minimise the need for future refurbishment.

The design blends Siemens’ bold brand identity with softer, more natural elements to create a balanced and welcoming environment.

Timber finishes are used throughout to introduce warmth and contrast against the stronger brand colours, while curtains and soft materials help improve acoustics and create a more comfortable atmosphere. Biophilic elements are integrated across the space, adding texture and a connection to nature.

A bespoke splashback in the tea point features artwork inspired by traditional Delft ceramics, created in collaboration with the local team to add a subtle local touch. This is reinforced through architectural cues inspired by Rotterdam’s Markthal, grounding the design in its Dutch context.
